Cruise

AnthemoftheSeas

We went on a 2-week cruise and had an amazing time!

My tan is fading and the cruise feels like it happened a year ago, but it's been only a few weeks since we got back. I'm going to share some stories and pictures over the next few posts.

Our cruise was 12-nights with Royal Caribbean out of New Jersey. We visited 6 ports - Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, Antigua, Martinique, Barbados and St. Kitts.

The trip started with an all-day car ride to New Jersey. We've done the trip before and were prepared with Gravol for Little K (to combat carsickness), snacks and games. We stopped for lunch and made it to our hotel after 9 hours. Would have been quicker but we got stuck in rush hour traffic in New Jersey.

Our hotel was a bit far from the cruise port but Uber got us there the next day and we boarded the ship. We were able to explore a bit, sign the kids up for Adventure Ocean, and finally got into our room and got our luggage.

We'd been sailing less than a day when J got on the FlowRider for the first time. We hadn't quite hit Florida and it was still chilly but he was super keen. The seas were actually quite rough the first few days because of a storm system we were skirting and it made for some pretty dramatic sunsets.

By Day 3 it was pretty warm and we'd settled into somewhat of a routine. The kids went to Adventure Ocean in the mornings and afternoons (9am-12pm and 2-5pm) while J was on the FlowRider whenever it was open, and I was either reading my book or exploring the ship.

Our first stop was in San Juan, Puerto Rico. J and I were on a mission: we needed Bonine (a motion sickness medication), and sunglasses, sandals and shorts for me. We got everything we needed in San Juan and explored a bit. That evening we took the kids off the ship to explore some more. There's a fort not far from the cruise port that we walked to and lots to see.

It was hot and the kids weren't physically ready I don't think so we didn't stay out too long.

It was always fun coming back to our room, which had a king-sized bed, a pull out couch, and a fake balcony, to see what towel animal would be waiting.

Our first beach day was in St. Maarten. We left the ship after breakfast and got a ride to a beach. The sand was "black" and the water was a light blue-green. A storm rolled through so the waves were pretty big. Little J LOVED being in the water and jumping the waves!

We jumped waves, we explored the beach and collected shells and shared a snack.

That night after dinner was my first attempt at the FlowRider. I got in and stayed up but basically just rode the wave from one side to the other, before bumping into the wall. I tried getting in the other way and stayed up only for a little bit. It's hard! Meanwhile J is carving like mad.

The next day we woke up in Antigua, ready to spend another day at the beach!

St.-John's, Antigua.

Antigua was my favourite beach day of the whole cruise. Other than an intense downpour that lasted only minutes, the weather was perfect, the sand was almost white and the water was a light turquoise. The waves weren't as intense as St. Maarten but we still played in the water and on the beach, we explored the beach including a wrecked sailboat, and Little K picked out a bracelet (we gave each kid a dollar amount they could spend on the trip.. this was purchase #1). The sun was pretty intense so we left a bit earlier than planned.
