First time skating

Little K
I know it's January, really I do! The holidays were so busy, first with Christmas and family time and then with work. Being able to knock out a postpartum shift (or three) while J was off work was nice. It was good for the kids to be able to spend so much time with their dad.

They spent so much time outside. Mild temperatures and piles of snow were the perfect combination for all sorts of outdoor fun.

So now that J is back to work and the kids are back to school, I'm catching up on everything including blogging. I missed writing in this space and have some posts that I started in December to finish. So, let's get to it!

We took the kids skating for the first time a few weeks ago. My hockey friends would be appalled that it took so long for me to get my kids on the ice, but it just never worked out. This year I was determined and so I picked up some second-hand skates last fall and we bought them helmets. Little K chose a white one with pink and Little J's is black and the same size I wear.

Off she goes!
I was happy to learn that public skating is free all winter thanks to a sponsorship deal the city got so this fun activity won't cost us anything. And let me tell you: the kids LOVED it! I have never seen them so excited for something and then to sustain that level of happiness and determination the entire time we were there. There were no tears and no frustration, just fun!

J and I were begging for breaks because it's hard on the back to lean over and hold up a sometimes fumbling, sometimes dead weight, always spastic 4 or 6 year old. The skating aids came in handy and by the end of our time there both kids were moving around on their own, albeit quite slowly.

I'm excited to get back out on the ice and see the kids progress and get more stable on their blades and eventually pick up speed. And next time we'll skip the coats and just wear hoodies with snowpants. Live and learn.
