Black Friday: Shop local

Black Friday has taken over in Canada. Our Thanksgiving was weeks ago but you'd never know it with the consumer craziness that descends. Black Friday deals started earlier this week and go all weekend. "Black Friday" really means "Buy stuff before Christmas" and it seems we can't help ourselves.

I'm not immune to the marketing and the buzz of all the great deals to be had. There's no denying that Christmas is coming and I like saving money just like the next guy, but there's something to be said about supporting local businesses. I have two - my doula business and my jewelry business - so I know what it's like.

Without further ado, here are 8 small businesses in Ottawa that I know and love and would love if you supported them!

Oliver's Labels by Rose's Mom

https://www.facebook.com/groups/OliversLabels.RosesMom/

I've gotten most of the kids' labels from Rose's Mom. These labels are great for shoes, backpacks, water bottles, clothes.. and she's really nice to work with. My favourite is the owls. Until December 1st you get 25% off everything including gift cards!

I can't show the labels because the kids' names are all over them.

Michelle's Barefoot Books

https://www.facebook.com/barefootmichelle/

Barefoot Books is a small publisher that focuses on books from all cultures. We have quite a few and really love Yoga Pretzels and Herb the Vegetarian Dragon. Until November 30th everything is 25% off and if you're not quite sure what to get, contact Michelle. She knows her stuff and can make suggestions.

Tay River AQUA is the Ottawa-equivalent to Le Nordiq. It's a beautiful getaway in Perth open year-round. J and I will be going very soon to soak in the pools and enjoy the sauna. Believe me, you need to check it out!

Ask almost any mom and she'll tell you that family pictures are on the top of her WANT list. Laura has quite the eye and will make your family sparkle. Let her capture these fleeting moments for you.

Tiny Feet Creations

https://www.facebook.com/TinyFeetStamped/

This is my little side business so I'm biased, but I can tell you that personalized pieces are coveted. Make Nana feel extra special with a pendant celebrating her and her grandchildren OR get a piece just for you! I make hand-stamped pieces, tree of life pendants, bird's nest pendants, and gemstone bracelets. I love to create so contact me and I'll get working on your piece!
