The Best Books of 2014

I'm still catching up after being away for a week and have finally finished this post about the books I read last year. Not your typical top 10 but it'll have to do!

My goal was to read 50 books in 2014. I made it past 60! I was trying to sort out a top 10 but because I read so many books by the same authors, I want to focus on authors this year. Here are my top 3 picks from everything I read last year.

Lisa Genova - Love Anthony, Still Alice, Left Neglected

Genova's books are incredible. They have a focus on a health issue - autism, Alzheimer's, left neglect - but really let the characters shine. I love books with a great story where I learn something along the way and all of her books have this. I can't wait to see the movie version of Still Alice about a woman with early onset Alzheimer's. It really makes you think about having a healthy body and mind and everything we can do with those things. It's heartbreaking watching the character fade away with the disease. I just saw she has another book, Inside the O'Briens.. I'll have to get that.

John Green - Looking for Alaska, Paper Towns, Will Grayson, Will Grayson, An Abundance of Katherines

You've probably heard of The Fault in Our Stars, Green's most popular book, that was made into a movie. I read the book in 2014 but just recently saw the movie. It's about teens with cancer. I don't want to give anything away, but I will say that both the book and the movie made me cry and I'd recommend them to everyone even though the book is classified as young adult fiction. I'd say my next favourite was Looking for Alaska though they're all great.

Gayle Forman - If I Stay, Where She Went, Just One Day, Just One Year

I won tickets to the movie premier of If I Stay before I read the book. I loved the movie even though it made me cry in the theater and loved the book even more. Where She Went is the second book and was almost as good. The other two, Just One Day and Just One Year, go together and were really good too. Definitely books to get lost in.
