World Prematurity Day

Today is World Prematurity Day, a day to celebrate and honour babies born early. How early? Before 37 weeks gestation. These babies can have many complications and have to spend time in the NICU in the hospital, and some die. It isn't an easy road.

I've been reading a lot of articles and stories about preemies today. I'm amazed that a baby born weighing less than a pound can live. That's incredible, but what's scary is that that most of the time no one knows why that baby was born early. There are risk factors, but most of the time it just happens.

One story that really stuck with me was Lesley's story. You can read her guest post for Yummy Mummy Club and then check out the book she wrote, Growing a Rainbow.

I remember when a coworker of mine had her baby early. She spent her days going between home, where her two kids were, and the hospital, where her new baby was. Exhausting.

If you want to read more, here are some good links:

Kids Health has a great article with everything you need to know about preemies.
March of Dimes in the US has info about prematurity too.
And in Canada, the Canadian Premature Babies Foundation is a great place to start.
