Remembrance Day

Today is Remembrance Day. There are ceremonies happening all across town - and the country - including one at Little J's school. Parents and siblings were invited so instead of heading downtown, Little K and I went to school.

We all went to school actually because we were running late, but Little J didn't mind. He loves the bus but he loves being dropped off at school even more.

After sending him off with his classmates, Little K and I made our way to the front of the school and joined the line of parents signing in. We found seats at the back of the gym and watched the students being led in. I pointed out kids we knew and Little J's teacher from last year. Little J's class was led in and it took a bit for Little K to spot her brother.

The ceremony wasn't very long but had all the important aspects of a Remembrance Day ceremony: the national anthem, words from the principal reminding us to be kind and to be thankful for those who have served/are serving, songs sung by the choir in both English and French, wreath laying, and a moment of silence after the Last Post.

I hope my kids never know war, but they will grow up knowing about soldiers and veterans, even if they feel somewhat removed from it all. I know I do and I know how lucky that makes me.

Lest we forget.
