Mary's Atlas: Mary Meets Ontario {Review and Giveaway}

**The giveaway is closed. Thank you to everyone who entered and spread the word on social media.**

It is no surprise that I love to read. I devour books and have a goal to read 50 this year. I really want to share my love of reading with my kids so they are surrounded by books and we go to the library often.

A good kids book for me is one that I don't mind reading over and over. Kids love repetition and will start being able to "read" along. I love books with beautiful pictures and a nice story, and teaching us things along the way is a bonus.

I was excited when I was contacted by Gwen Smid, a Canadian author on a mission to spread a love of geography and our great country. She sent over a copy of her second book, Mary's Atlas: Mary Meets Ontario, for me to share with my kids.

Mary's Atlas: Mary Meets Ontario is cute and informative. Mary uses her special atlas to dive into Ontario where she meets Gavi the loon. Together they zoom around the province trying to find out why the Great Lakes have dried up and they learn interesting facts along the way. You'll be amazed at just how much information is crammed into this cute story. There is a map of Ontario at the beginning and interesting facts on almost every page.

The story is fun and the illustrations are great. My favourite are the beavers. You can see more on Gwen's Facebook page.

Little J and Little K, who are 4 and 3, loved the story and especially loved seeing the drawings of Ottawa. Someday I hope to take them to Niagara Falls to see the falls and hear the roar of the water, and Thunder Bay to see the Sleeping Giant, and they'll recognize them both from this book. I loved that not only did they learn fun facts about Ontario, they learned some new words too.

You can learn more about the Mary's Atlas books (Ontario and Manitoba) on the website, including which local book stores carry them. And keep an eye out for the next book, Mary Meets Alberta, which will be published this winter.

You can connect with the author on Facebook (Gwen Smid author) and Twitter (@gwensmid). And I should mention that Gwen, who is super sweet by the way, is donating all the royalties from Mary Meets Ontario to cancer research.

And now one of you is going to win a copy! All you have to do is leave a comment telling me what your favourite children's book is and fill out the form below. My parents tell me I asked to have Brer Rabbit read to me over and over, but I remember liking the Berenstain Bears books best.

Contest closes Sunday, May 4th at midnight. Good luck!

  2. I had a love hate relationship with my favourite book. It is called freckle juice. I think the author was Judy Bloom. Being covered myself with freckles as a kid growing up, I was very bullied when my grade one teacher read this to the class. I grew up and learned to except myself. When I had kids I even bought it so that they could enjoy the story as I once had.

    1. You were bullied because of your freckles? That's so sad. My kids are just getting freckles and we make a big deal of them so that they love them.

  8. My favourite book was a book of poems that included a poem called Jonathan Bing. I wish I could remember the book name... As I got older I loved anything Judy Bloom (I too was teased for freckles). I also loved LOVED a book called The Egypt Game. I lost count of how many times I read it.
