Blogiversary: Celebrating 10 Years!

IMG_8314 (Medium)

Today marks the tenth anniversary of my blogging career. I call it a career because I now earn the tiniest amounts of money from it. Unbelievable really, that my words here have led to so many things: friendships and community, conferences and writing opportunities, fun events and activities, and now actual money.

This blog started out as a way for me to procrastinate from doing schoolwork in my final year of university. I was almost done my bachelor degree and a few months away from getting married so I needed something else on my plate. Obviously. I've always loved writing and it made sense to me.

My first posts are painful to read and when I started blogging I didn't know what was out there beyond a few friends who wrote. The blog world is much bigger than I ever imagined. My writing and this blog have evolved, and so has my understanding of it all, but even after 10 years and a couple iterations, this blog remains a small fish in a very large pond. There is an ocean of blogs on every subject under the sun.

To be honest, sometimes I struggle with it all, but in the end I keep writing. I enjoy this way too much to let a little insecurity, a feeling of blah that occasionally comes over me, or some harsh words written about me, keep me from blogging. When I don't write there's something missing. This is an outlet for my creativity, a journal of our days, and a connection with readers, old and new. I write for myself and use this blog to remind me of the things I've done and the places I've been. What did we do for Valentine's Day last year? I can check. You would be surprised how often I do that.

Through blogging I've met people and I've gotten to do some pretty fun things. It used to be a comment here or there, but now it's full conversations, it's hugging people at conferences, it's taking the kids to a museum or enjoying a toy rental for three months in our house. It's products to test and some to give away. It's actual cash in my hands. It means a lot to me.

I can't say I'll always be blogging but I know that I'll always be writing, some way. Now if I were some big fish blogger this would be where I'd announce a giveaway to celebrate my decade of blogging, but I'm not and I don't have anything planned. I hope that my other giveaways and my stories make up for it. Thank you for reading and commenting and sharing and tweeting. I love knowing that my words are read by others and I love connecting with you on here and social media. Here's to the next 10 years, whatever they may bring.
