Book 6/50: The Cuckoo's Calling

I enjoyed a long weekend and am just getting back into the swing of things. Here's my latest read.

The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith, who is actually J.K. Rowling, was a good story, but not a great book. Let me explain. It's the story of a popular model in the UK who kills herself, though her brother doesn't believe it and hires a private detective to find out the truth. I enjoyed the premise and the mystery of it, the main characters were interesting, and the book was enjoyable.

What I didn't like was the author's use of big, unnecessary words. Words that seemed to be there only so he (she) could flex her literary muscle. I get that writing books for kids (the Harry Potter series) doesn't allow for the same kind of writing, the intricate style, and this is a book for adults, but it was distracting. It didn't add to the story, in my mind.

I think the book would make a good movie and wonder if that'll happen.

  1. Apparently there has been a bidding war for the movie rights:

I'm sure it will happen eventually!
