Book 1/50: Writing Down the Bones

I use Grammarly's online plagiarism checker because the English language has more exceptions than rules, and I want my writing to be exceptional!

My first book of 2014 was Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within by Natalie Goldberg. It's a book about writing, but with a strong Buddhist focus. The author approaches writing the same way a Buddhist master approaches meditation: with calm determination. Where practice, practice, practice is the name of the game. Writing, literally putting pen to paper, over and over will make you a better writer. Filling notebook after notebook will help you improve your craft. The author likens it to a sports team practicing before ever competing, a metaphor that really spoke to me.

She encourages the reader to try different ways of writing: using prompts to get started, writing for specific lengths of time, in different places and at different times of day, for example. She has so many ideas to inspire and focus you in hopes of creating better writing. I will take away many things from this book and something I've applied many times already is to stop making statements as questions or using qualifiers. Women and minorities often end their statements with a question (according to a study the author read) and I've noticed that this is something I do quite often. I've resolved to stop. No more wishy-washy statements.

I read mostly fiction but sometimes I hear of a non-fiction that sounds interesting. This book was interesting, but here's the thing: I'm not a writer. I'm not looking to pen poems or publish novels. I write because I love to write and I like sharing my stories here on this blog and on other sites. Writing is just a hobby to me, something I enjoy, but I have other interests that fight for my time. Even so, this was an interesting book and I'm glad to have kicked off 2014 with it. Tell me, what are you reading? I have two young adult science fiction books up next!
