Birth

Hospital parking lot in the middle of the night.

I recently supported my third doula client. Being a doula is rewarding, so very rewarding, and I'm always learning. There are some specific things that I learned at this labour - physical things that I'll be reading up on, and personal things that I'll be thinking about. It's not just knowing the physical process of birth or about the things you can do to help a labouring woman, it's about so much more. And most of it you can't learn from reading books or taking training.

You learn from doing, you learn being in that room, beside that woman. You learn from your reactions and hers, you learn from the words spoken by her partner or the nurse.  You learn with your senses - the smells, sounds and sights.

I don't know it all, I don't know everything about birth or labour or babies. I only hope that I can keep doing what I do and learning as I go and supporting my clients the best I can.

  1. Yup, so much to learn!! I'm about 45 births in, and I still feel clueless sometimes :) However, I noticed around birth 20 that I really started to feel comfortable in my role. But the physical/medical side of things still surprises me sometimes!!
