5 totally useful baby shower gift ideas

Everyone is drawn to the cute little sleepers, the hats with ears, the super soft blankets, the adorable plush animals, and the bright rattles. I get it. I am too. But maybe mom and dad need something other than one more baby blanket or another onesie that baby will grow out of in no time.

Here are five things that you can shower on the mama-to-be and know that you are helping her out when she'll need it most: when she has a newborn baby and doesn't sleep more than 2 hour at a time.

Money for a postpartum doula
Did you know that you can pay someone to come and help out in those first few days/weeks at home? A postpartum doula helps during the newborn period and nurtures the entire family. She provides education and assurance, and helps around the house. She is basically your mother or mother-in-law, but trained, educated, and knowledgeable about all things baby. She will help you get on your feet, giving you confidence in yourself and your parenting.

Diapers and wipes
Babies go through so many diapers - they poop a lot! And wipes are useful for so many things. You really can never have too many of either, so grab a big pack of each. You won't get any awards for cutest present, but you'll know that your gift will be used.

When you have a new baby the laundry piles up, the dishes get left in the sink and on the counter, vacuuming is a thing of the past, and dusting is just laughable. The mess is there and is such a pain. Housecleaning is just awesome. Let mom and dad focus on new baby while someone else cleans the toilets. They will thank you.

Meals for the freezer or fresh fruit and veggies
You know what you don't want to be doing when you have a newborn and are hardly sleeping? Operating heavy machinery or using your limited brain power to come up with healthy meals. Having meals in the freezer that just need to be heated or fresh fruit and veggies already washed and cut up is amazing. Pop a lasagna in the oven and grab some carrot sticks to chomp on while you wait. Heaven.

Gift card
Gift cards can be a little awkward because the person knows exactly how much you spent, but I'm telling you, they won't care! Mom and dad will use that money to get something they want or need. Maybe they put that money towards a bigger item that they couldn't afford by themselves, or maybe they'll buy more diapers and wipes. Gift cards for baby stores, Starbucks, the grocery store, iTunes.. whatever really. Maybe a nice restaurant that they can eat at months down the road, that's okay too, especially if it comes with the offer of baby sitting.

There you have it - 5 totally useful baby shower gift ideas. Still want to get them that cuddly bear? Go ahead, but throw in a pack of diapers and wipes and know that you're awesome and your friend will love you for it. Do you have anything to add to my list? What was the best thing you received at your baby shower?
