Back to school? Not yet

Little J is turning 3 soon and loves the idea of school. He so badly wants to go, but kindergarden doesn't start until age 4 here.

I used to love this time of year (which seems to happen earlier and earlier every year). I loved going back to school, getting new pens and paper and books and the excitement of starting new classes and meeting new people. For all of university it also meant moving to another city.

For years after I finished school I always felt weird not going back to school, not moving. I felt bored with my job and my life for most of September. Thankfully that feeling passed as the years went on. I haven't been "back to school" since 2003.

I'm excited for Little J though. Next September he gets to start school. We talk about how he'll get to ride the school bus and we've biked by his school. He will also start preschool one morning a week in January and then two mornings in April and May.

I wouldn't bother with preschool except kindergarden will be full days five days a week. Right now he isn't away from me for very long and I think preschool will help with the transition. It will get him used to being away from me and being around other people. He can be quite shy.

I'm also looking forward to some time with just Baby K. Being the second child, she hardly ever gets either me or J to herself. I don't know what we'll do and it doesn't matter. We'll enjoy our time together.

Eventually Baby K will go to school too. I better have something planned to do with myself because the idea of being home by myself for a few days is exciting, but for days and days is just strange. I will have no excuse for a messy house then.

  1. Mine started preschool this morning! 3 (full) days per week for the next year, and then it's off to full time kindergarten next year. She's already been in a private daycare 3 days/week for the past 2 years, but this new "school" is a big step!! It went well this morning, and we'll have to see what the rest of the weeks/months brings :)

  2. Preschool is great for preparing them for kindergarten. I had my oldest in preschool as well. At the time he was an only child so got him used to other kids, structure in a school setting and listening to adults besides me.
