Couch to 5K or how I plan to run and not get hurt

I went for a run tonight. In the rain. In my new shoes.

But I use the word run loosely. There was more walking than running because it was my first run of the Couch to 5K plan. I figure if I follow this plan it should ease me into running. Last time I started up again, about a month ago, I increased my mileage too quickly and hurt myself. Probably had something to do with having the wrong shoes too, but still.

So I got an app on my iTouch that tells me when to walk and when to run. I didn't think I'd like it but I really do. After training for my half marathon in 2009 using the run for ten minutes, walk for 1 plan, I'm fully on board for walking. I actually raced that way too and got a decent time.

I was only estimating my times though and, especially on training runs, I'd spend a lot of time looking for the next spot to stop or start running. Like that lamp post up there or the second tree or whatever. But tonight I ran when my phone beeped and walked when it beeped. And in between I just enjoyed the view.

It was mindless in a good way.

And I took my friend CB's advice and took a cold shower when I got home. I've never taken a cold shower on purpose before but it felt amazing.

My end goal is a 5K race at the end of September. I have 9 weeks to train and a 9-week couch to 5K training plan to follow. I just did my first run of week 1 and it consisted of a 5 minute warm up walk, a minute of running followed by 90 seconds of walking, repeated for 20 minutes, and a 5 minute cool down. In that 30 minutes I went 3.2K.

I'm really hoping to stick to 3 runs a week for the next 9 weeks. Hopefully with some yoga thrown in too. Wouldn't that be great?


  1. Good job!! What program are you using? I also am really liking my C25K program, I'm glad you're getting into it as well :)
