Water ban and rain barrels

Our neighbourhood was recently slapped with an outdoor water ban. No outside water use until the water lines to our area are fixed. No sprinklers, water parks, pools, car washing, watering plants.. nothing.

To say there was a panic is probably close to the truth. People went a little wild thinking about the reality of a long, hot summer with no water.

We were really looking forward to taking Little J to the parks with splash pads and J loves having a clean car.
The answer: a rain barrel.

The City put on a program that gives you a rebate when you buy a rain barrel so that's what we did. J cannot not wash the car all summer.
I really wasn't sure if it was going to be worth it, not because of a high cost of the barrel, but the amount of water it would get for us to use.

I shouldn't have worried. During the first rainfall after J installed the rain barrel, it was overflowing. He happily washed the car.
He'll be happy this summer and the car will be clean and we'll just have to wait until next year to show Little J the wonder that is a splash pad.

Or maybe not. Apparently work to fix the water lines is ahead of schedule and the ban might be lifted by mid-July. And the city is opening splash pads on the weekends. Overall, it hasn't been so bad.
