On post-partum hair loss

There are a bunch of things "they" don't tell you about having a baby. Things that you never see on tv or in movies where characters are pregnant and give birth. "They" like to gloss over the fact that giving birth is messy and after having a baby you won't be wearing your skinny jeans for months.

They happily tell you that while you're pregnant you will enjoy strong, healthy nails and luxurious hair. What they don't tell you is that once you pop the kid out, your nails and hair will return to what they were like before you got on the baby-making train.

For me, the big shock was how much hair I lost for months and months after having Baby J. I'm talking fistfulls every time I showered. If I hadn't been expecting it, I would have been alarmed.

I was quite pleased with how my shower drain was dealing with the onslaught of shed hair until recently. My hair loss has slowed and, dare I say, has returned to the normal hair falling out here and there. But by the end of a shower, I was ankle deep in soapy water. After a week of sloshing around I decided it was time to deal with the problem.

Gagging the entire time, I pulled as much hair out of the drain as is currently on my head. Even just relating this story has me battling my gag reflex but I am happy to report that the water rushes down the drain again and you can hardly notice the hundreds on inch-long hairs on my head.

Oh, did "they" forget to mention that too? All the hair you lost will grow back and you will more than likely want a short style to cover the randomness of these new little hairs. At least until they don't stick straight up anymore.

You're welcome.

  1. I didn't have that problem after having Hayden... Although I still lose lots of hair in the shower - I always have. I ahve pretty thick hair.

I admit that the notion of wet hair strands makes me want to vomit. I have an aversion to it. I want those nasty hairs away from me. Ew!!!

I have a friend who was diagnosed with alopecia after having her second child (she lost all of hre hair - everywhere). It was REALY hard for her, but now she's okay with it. She wears hats.

Anywho... I'm glad your hair loss has slowed down and the drain is running smoothly.

    Have a lovely day...
