1 car, 2 car, 3 car, 4!

Some history... J and I both had a car when we moved in together in 2003. He had his family's old Saturn and I had a Lumina. Both were 1992s. Eventually the Lumina died and we were down to 1 car. We bought our first new car - a 2005 Mazda 3 - and for a while had two cars again. Then we decided to sell the Saturn to J's sister and were back to 1 car.

Having 1 car was an adjustment. It wasn't so bad when we were living at our old place, which is more central than where we live now. We were biking to work and I was able to carpool to a lot of my volleyball and baseball games. Where we live now is more satellite and carpooling is hardly an option so figuring out schedules is more difficult.

In the past two years, we were lucky to have J's sister's car for two 6-month periods while she was overseas and that gave us a taste of freedom. Since J carpools to work and I'm on mat leave, we decided it wasn't often that we would need 2 cars and we'd figure it out when we did.

But then J saw a posting for a 2005 Mazda 3 hatch, manual transmission with a moonroof, owned by a certified mechanic, super well maintained, for a good price. We went yesterday to check it out and ended up buying it.

We weren't seriously looking for a second car, but it was too good a deal to pass up. We dropped off the cheque today and are now waiting for it to clear and for the paperwork to be ready. We should have it this week sometime.

J has been in the garage for hours and hours reorganizing (the goal is to fit both cars in there comfortably, but I think he just likes being out there and this gives him a good excuse).

I'm really excited to have a 3 again. It was by far my favourite car, and I've had a lot of cars. It will be nice to have something a little bigger than the Yaris. Don't get me wrong - the Yaris is a great little car but it is little. Now we have the wee one and the slightly bigger one. I'm excited!

I used to have the old Protege, and loved it too. :)

Congrats on the new addition to your (vehicle) family.
